The Deep Dive: Woebegone Dive
Founders Dylan and Lara were born and raised on the South Coast and have more than 30 years of combined ocean experience. Woebegone provides scuba and freediving instruction for different experience levels, including SDI-certified scuba training and Molchanovs freediving courses covering breath-hold, finning, equalisation, safety and rescue skills. Advanced training includes a Wave 2 course for certified freedivers developing skills to a stated depth of 30 metres.
Boat trips visit offshore reefs, sea caves and other coastal sites, while shore-based diving and snorkelling provide another way to explore Jervis Bay Marine Park. Access and conditions vary, so visitors should check conditions, use appropriate equipment and certification, dive with a buddy and follow marine-park rules.
Diving and Snorkelling
Woebegone offers guided beach snorkelling, introductory freediving and the Above & Below Snorkel/Freedive Boat Expedition. The boat experience runs for approximately five to six hours, with sites selected according to weather and ocean conditions. Activities can include snorkelling and freediving around reefs, sea caves and other marine habitats. Freediving courses cover breath-hold technique, finning and equalisation, with training available for beginners and certified freedivers. Woebegone also provides SDI-certified scuba-diving instruction.
Whale Swim
Woebegone’s whale-swim season runs from June to the end of October. The open-water experience requires confident swimmers with snorkelling experience who can swim 200 metres unassisted. Guests can bring their own suitable mask, snorkel, wetsuit and fins or arrange equipment hire through Woebegone. An 8mm wetsuit is recommended for the experience. In-water encounters depend on ocean conditions and whale behaviour and cannot be guaranteed. Woebegone allows wildlife to determine the interaction rather than chasing or crowding animals. Participants should follow crew instructions and allow flexibility if weather affects departures.
